It is essential to know about hunting on Sapientza.

The Sapientza Island is 300 kilometres away from Athens. You may hunt for a Sapientza mouflon or Kri Kri ibex during the four-day (Monday-Thursday) expedition in November, if the weather conditions do not allow the boat to reach the island. You may still hunt on Friday if the weather conditions prevent the boat from reaching the island. Weekend hunting is not permitted. It is advisable to book return tickets that are flexible. If an animal is shot and escapes, the hunter will continue hunting until he draws blood, at which point the hunt will be terminated and the animal will be sought. If the animal is wounded and escapes without being seen by the hunter, it will be considered dead. The search for the wounded animal will continue, and the hunter will receive it if it is found. Hunt during the booked hunting days is good until trophy is taken or wounded, or two reasonable chances have been missed or passed over.  Every morning at 8:00 a.m., we join the forestry official and the preserve hunting representative at Methoni quay to take the only official hunting boat out. As the sun rises, bathing the island in its warm rays, we arrive. It is 8:30-8:50 a.m. when we arrive. The captain drops us off at one of the four small docks, depending on how high the waves are and what we want to do.

The Kri Kri goat originated on Crete, but over time crossbred with the local wild goats, producing all Kri Kris living in mainland Greece as hybrids with distinctive color and large, twisted horns. Ibexes on Sapientza Island, in contrast, are a purebred population descended from Cretan Ibexes with modest, straight horns that were introduced more than 40 years ago.
After 14:00, the island is a pure Kri Kri and mouflon preserve. No one may remain there overnight. We are unable to visit the island between 8:30 and 14:00 three or four days each week if the weather is nice and the waves aren’t too big, because hunting is then permitted. We might be able to conquer any peak we saw an animal at the island’s highest point, which is 200 metres high. It would take us an hour to get there, if we weren’t in a rush.
Months before the hunting season begins, preparation for Kri Kri hunting begins. You must apply to the state department in charge of islands and Kri Kri hunting for hunting licenses in order to purchase the number of tags we require in order to allow hunters access to the island.
The hunting program for a particular year determines the quantity of these permits, which are limited in quantity. Before the hunting program is created and authorised by the Greek government and the Ministry of forests and agriculture, it is inspected for compliance with rules, terms, and conditions months in advance. These conditions are typically minor or infrequent year after year. You may find the previous year’s translated documents on our website.

Before applying for a hunting license, you must pay the associated fees. If you are not awarded a hunting license for the current season, you can sign up for a waiting list for the subsequent season and learn more about hunting laws. Hunting is only allowed in this area if you have permission from the government, as it is a protected zone and special access is permitted by law. Hunting is permitted in teams, as stipulated by the government’s strategy. Every team has a set hunting zone and weapon list. Before approaching Greek officials, you must get the necessary documents to hunt in the country. Shotguns are the only weapons permitted for hunting. If you do not get a trophy or wound an animal or miss two reasonable opportunities, you will lose your license. This hunt will remain in effect until a trophy is taken, an animal is wounded, or two reasonable chances are missed or passed over.
